A fatal semi-truck rollover has shut down I-80 in the direction of Salt Lake County

Tooele, Utah (ABC4) — The eastbound lanes of I-80 heading into Salt Lake County from Tooley were closed after a semi truck overturned Thursday, killing one person.

Lt. Cameron Rhoden of the Utah Highway Patrol said the crash happened near mile marker 102 near the SR-201 interchange.

The semi truck was reportedly carrying double trailers filled with sand when it lost control on a curve. Then the truck overturned and burst into flames.

The driver of the semi-truck, whose identity has not been established, died on the spot. There are no other vehicles involved in the accident.

Rhoden said all lanes of eastbound I-80 were closed while law enforcement investigated and cleared the scene. All eastbound traffic is being detoured onto SR-201 towards Magna. The crash also affected the westbound lanes, with debris blocking the left lane, leaving only one lane open.

Officials do not have an exact time when I-80 will reopen, but Lt. Rhoden estimated the closure will last more than four hours.
