Mullinax said for the upper Midwest, the storm will leave a 2- to 4-inch “band of snowfall” from central Minnesota through parts of northern Wisconsin to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Minneapolis and St. Paul could also see light snow.

According to Mullinax, the system in the Pacific Northwest is “a series of smaller storm-related disturbances” that are moving through the region, bringing moisture to several states.

Mullinax said the snow will likely be heaviest in the Cascades, where up to 3 feet is expected in higher elevations. Winter weather warnings are also in effect for the northern Sierra Nevada Mountains in California and parts of the northern Rockies in southwestern Montana and central Idaho.

He warned that the snow will be a multi-day phenomenon, and the level of snowfall will increase overnight from Thursday to Friday.

The Seattle, Washington, office said residents could expect a “brief break” in more consistent snowfall Thursday before it intensified Thursday night into Friday.

Some meteorologists urged people to keep a winter emergency kit in their car in an easily accessible place with items such as a flashlight, batteries, blankets, a shovel, water, non-perishable food and chains.

Other regions have warned that heavy rain will change to heavy snow as the storm develops.

“Widespread rain is expected early this morning and will become heavy at times. As colder air begins to move in this morning, the rain will transition to heavy snow from west to east with snowfall rates of an inch per hour at times through the early afternoon,” the NWS urban office said – siblings “A few thunderstorms are also possible, which could add more snow.”

In addition to winter weather warnings, other states faced a wave of cold temperatures, prompting freeze and freeze warnings. Parts of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and north Texas were under freeze warnings, and a freeze warning also affected parts of north Texas.
