‘Scary’: Man shot and killed during interaction with police in Aurora

The shooting happened when police responded to a home invasion in the area of Bayview and St. John’s Wednesday night

A York Regional Police officer was injured after interacting with a now-deceased man following a break-in at a home on Downey Circle.

The Chief Coroner’s Office was notified to identify the deceased man and the officer was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“When officers arrived on scene, they immediately spoke with the male suspect,” said Const. James Dixon. “As a result of this interaction, officers discharged their firearms and the man died.”

Police notified the home owners of the break-in and are seeking video evidence from neighbors.

Residents, meanwhile, will have to look elsewhere for accommodation tonight as police have cordoned off several homes near the incident while they investigate. They are asked to find friends to stay with them until they return home.

“We appreciate the public’s cooperation with this and understanding that we have work to do for the Special Investigations Team to do and we will try to get people back into their homes as quickly as possible,” Dixon said. .

Tom Alberico, who has lived on Trent Street for 26 years, said he was shocked by the number of police cars in the area. He said he heard sirens and then what sounded like a bang.

“It’s a little scary,” Alberico said. “This has never happened on our street. It’s a bit annoying.”

Officers prevented him from returning home for some time because of the street closure, he added. He called his wife, who was already at home, and she said she was safe and the door was locked.

He said it was always quiet here. He asked the police, but they did not answer.

He saw the York Region paramedics, but he didn’t see what they were doing. However, he saw the police take away what appeared to be a large-caliber weapon.

There were about 20 cruisers and four ambulances at the scene.
